Basics of Writing Fiction 1

This course will explore the basics of character development, setting, plot, and point of view to help beginning writers get their story on paper. Students will be asked to write a first draft of their story idea outside of class. Our goal is to help you understand the critiquing process and introduce you to the world of publishing.

Basics of Writing Fiction 2
Pam Zollman Tuesdays 6:30-8:30 pm 4 weeks, May 4-25, 2010 Cost: $95
This course is designed for writers with a manuscript in first draft form, ready for revision. Pam will work through the editorial process with chapter-book authors, while Tim will help picture-book authors work through the dummying stage and discuss the relationship of illustration to the text. Specific strategies for submission will prepare students for publication.

Principles of illustration
Tim Davis Mondays 6:30-8:30 pm 6 weeks, Mar. 1-Apr. 5, 2010 Cost: $145
This course is designed for talented artists interested in pursuing illustration. Tim will lead students through exercises in composition, line, use of black & white, use of color, sequential illustration, and the development of a professional portfolio. Classes will include critiques of student artwork, and examples from various professional artists. Students should bring samples of their work and drawing materials to the first class.

Digital Illustration 1
Tim Davis Tuesdays 6:30-8:30 pm 4 weeks, Apr.13-May 4, 2010 Cost: $95
This course is specifically designed to help students learn the basics of illustration using Adobe products, especially Illustrator and Photoshop. Tim will discuss practical strategies for the creation of digital illustrations and assign correlating projects to be critiqued in class. Students will need to have their own computers with Photoshop and/or Illustrator.

Digital Illustration 2

This course is designed to build on the skills learned in Digital Illustration 1, again using Adobe products, especially Illustrator and Photoshop. Tim will discuss more practical strategies for the creation of digital illustrations and assign correlating projects to be critiqued in class. Students will need to have their own computers with Photoshop and/or Illustrator.

Characterization, Plot, and Structure

This advanced course is designed for writers working through the revision process for their manuscripts. Pam will provide specific help for authors to help their writing reach its full potential.

Writing & Illustrating Picture Books
Tim Davis Mondays 6:30-8:30 pm 4 weeks, Apr.12-May 3, 2010 Cost: $95
This course is designed for writers and/or illustrators who want to write, refine and even illustrate a picture book. Tim will go through each step in the process, especially focusing on how the art and text should work together in this unique form of children’s literature.

Writing for Magazines
Pam Zollman Thursdays 6:30-8:30 pm 4 weeks, Apr.22-May 13, 2010 Cost: $95
Most magazine editors are begging for articles! So that means that magazines are a great way to get published. But these editors want well-written, strong articles, so we’ll learn how to write them. In this course, we will analyze individual magazines, discuss the different types of articles, study article structures, and learn about credible research sources. We’ll also write articles and query letters…and have fun doing it!
